Martii Maclean lives in a tin shack by the sea, catching sea-gulls which she uses to make delicious pies, and writing weird stories. She likes going for long bicycle rides with her cat, who always wears aviator goggles to stop her whiskers blowing up into her eyes as they speed down to the beach to search for mermaid eggs.
Or how about this……
Martii Maclean writes fantastical, adventurous tales for children and teens and sometimes adults. She was born in Sydney, Australia and now lives in Brisbane with her husband Trevor and her cat Minerva.
Martii has worked as an educator and librarian, allowing her to share her love of stories and of story-telling with many young people. This has given her precious insight into what makes a story enjoyable.
Many young readers have asked her for help as they search for stories filled with the odd, the weird and the unexpected. This has inspired Martii to create thought-filled stories that explore the wonderful world of ‘what if’.
When did Martii choose writing?
I first discovered the enthralling worlds hidden inside the covers of science fiction and fantasy books long ago, on a stormy Wednesday evening.
I was hurrying to choose my books before the library closed. The rain was lashing against the windows, the lightning flashed as the librarian rang the bell to signal closing time. I hurriedly grabbed ‘A Wrinkle in Time’ from the shelf and rushed to check out my three books.
Tucking my books inside my raincoat, I ran into the storm towards the glow of the interior light of Dad’s car.
I never read the other two books that I borrowed that night, I just read and re-read that strange tale about a teenage girl who……well I don’t want to spoil it for you.
From then on I was hooked on stories about the weird, the expected and the impossible.
Ever since that stormy night, I have searched for stories that stretch the normal world into something strange and fantastical. There were never enough of these quirky tales, so I enjoyed making up my own, and decades later, I still do.
